Patio styles and finishes
Planning your new concrete patio
A patio is one of the best ways to get more use out of your backyard. A little planning up front makes sure it fits the way your family actually lives outside.
Start with how you will use it
Think about what you want to do out there. A small patio for two chairs and a grill needs very different space than an outdoor dining area for eight or a spot for an outdoor kitchen.
As a rough guide, a dining table with chairs needs room to pull the chairs back and walk around them, and a seating area needs space between furniture so people are not squeezing past. If you are not sure, lay out a garden hose or rope in your yard to see the shape before you decide.
Shape and layout
Patios do not have to be a plain rectangle. Curved edges can soften the look and flow around trees and flower beds, and an L-shape can wrap around a corner of the house. We can also connect your patio to a walkway so it is easy to get to from the driveway or side gate.
We will lay out the forms to your design, so you can see the exact shape on the ground before we pour.
Drainage comes first
The patio needs to slope slightly away from your house so rain runs off instead of pooling against the foundation or the back door. North Texas storms can drop a lot of water fast, so getting the grade right is important.
We grade the area and build a compacted base before we pour, which also helps protect the slab from the clay soil movement that cracks so much concrete in DFW.
Broom finish or stamped?
A broom finish is simple, clean and slip-resistant, and it is the best value. Stamped concrete adds the look of stone, brick, slate or wood with color, and it turns a patio into a real feature of your backyard.
A popular middle ground is a broom-finished patio with a stamped or colored border. It adds style without the cost of stamping the whole surface.
Thinking ahead
If you might add a pergola, a covered roof, a fire pit or an outdoor kitchen later, tell us at your estimate. Planning for it now can save you from cutting into a finished patio down the road.
It is also a good time to think about walkways, steps or a second level if your yard slopes.
Caring for your patio
Wait a day or two before walking on your new patio, and about a week before setting heavy furniture or a grill on it. After that, concrete patios need very little upkeep: sweep it, rinse it off, and clean up grease or spills before they soak in.
Stamped patios look their best when they are resealed every few years to protect the color.
