  • Wide or spreading cracks that keep coming back after patching
  • Sunken or uneven slabs that scrape bumpers or trip people
  • Water pooling near the garage or flowing toward the house
  • Crumbling edges or a flaking surface from age and weather
  • Tree roots lifting and breaking the concrete

Driveway guide

What goes into a driveway that lasts

A driveway looks simple: a flat slab of concrete. But most of what decides whether it stays smooth for decades happens before the first truck of concrete shows up.

Why North Texas driveways crack

Most of the Dallas–Fort Worth area sits on expansive clay. When it rains, the clay soaks up water and swells. During a dry summer it shrinks and pulls away. That constant up-and-down movement puts stress on any slab sitting on top of it.

Driveways that were poured on soft, uncompacted dirt, without enough steel, or without proper control joints are the ones that crack, sink or heave first. Replacing the concrete without fixing what is underneath usually means the same problems come back.

It starts with the base

Before we pour, we remove the old concrete, dig out soft soil, and grade the area so water runs away from your garage and foundation. Then we build and compact a solid base.

This is the part of the job you never see once the driveway is finished, and it is the part that matters most. A well-prepared base gives the slab even support, so it is far less likely to settle in one spot and crack.

Rebar and thickness

Every driveway we pour is reinforced with rebar laid in a grid across the slab. The steel holds the concrete together if the ground moves, so small hairline cracks stay small instead of spreading and separating.

We pour residential driveways 4 inches thick. Combined with a good base and rebar, that gives everyday cars, SUVs and trucks a strong, long-lasting surface.

Control joints: cracks where you want them

Concrete shrinks a little as it cures, and some cracking is natural. Control joints are straight cuts or grooves placed at planned spots across the slab. They give the concrete a place to crack neatly, hidden inside the joint, instead of randomly across the surface.

Placing joints at the right spacing and depth is one of the small details that separates a clean-looking driveway from one covered in random cracks a year later.

Choosing a finish

A broom finish is the most popular choice. The light texture gives good traction when the driveway is wet and keeps the cost down. If you want more curb appeal, stamped concrete can give the whole driveway a stone, brick or slate look, or you can keep a broom finish and add a stamped border around the edges.

At your free estimate we will walk you through the options and show you what fits your home and budget.

Caring for your new driveway

Give the concrete time to cure before heavy use. You can usually walk on it after a day or two and drive a car on it after about a week; we will tell you exactly when for your project. Keep heavy trucks, trailers and dumpsters off it for longer.

After that, a little care goes a long way: rinse off oil and chemical spills, keep water draining away from the edges, and consider a sealer to protect the surface and keep it looking fresh.

DFW Solid Concrete has restored a lot of my faith in contractors. Absolutely some of the best I’ve ever encountered. They also had to keep my neighbors happy, and they managed that as well. It was, after all, a full driveway and sidewalk in small spaces. Excellent work ethic. Excellent finished product.
Kayal S. · Driveway & sidewalk
DFW Solid Concrete is by far the best contractor I've worked with. They've replaced my patio in my Plano's house. The process was straight forward: timing, expectations, and pricing were all communicated clearly. I was expecting delays, last minuth difference in pricing but they have done exactly what they said they will do and were so professional. Definitely recommend them and will use them again!

FAQ

Questions, answered

How much does a new concrete driveway cost?

Every project is different, so we price each one after we measure. You get an exact written estimate, free, at your on-site visit.

How long does it take?

Most driveways take 1–3 days, depending on the project and the weather.

When can I drive on my new driveway?

You can usually walk on it after a day or two and drive a car on it after about a week. We will tell you exactly when for your project.

Can you widen my existing driveway?

Yes. We can add extensions, extra parking pads or a wider approach. We will look at how to tie the new section into the existing concrete at your estimate.

Do you remove the old driveway?

Yes. Tear-out and haul-off of the old concrete is included in every driveway replacement.

Should I repair or replace my driveway?

Small, stable hairline cracks can often be left alone or sealed. Wide, spreading cracks, sunken sections and crumbling surfaces usually mean the base has failed, and replacement is the long-term fix. We will tell you honestly which one you need.
